The term "zombie drug" usually refers to xylazine ("tranq"), a veterinary sedative that is often mixed with fentanyl and other illicit drugs. It can cause:
- Extreme drowsiness and loss of coordination
- People standing or walking in unusual bent-over positions
- Slow breathing and heart rate
- Severe skin ulcers and tissue damage ("flesh-rotting" wounds) in some users

In recent years, officials have also reported another powerful sedative called medetomidine appearing in the local drug supply, creating additional health risks.
